First Day of School
On Tuesday, September the 6th, I returned back to Colonel By Secondary School. After a long summer holiday, which involved me going to summer school and to cadet summer camp. I woke up at 7:00, but woke up late after I decided to have an extra 5 minutes of sleep. I quickly ate breakfast, and I prepared my backpack. On the way to the bus stop, I saw a bus drive by, and so I ran to try to catch it, only to see another bus appear. I took this bus instead, but I still barely caught it. After a thirty minute bus ride, I arrived at Hurdman Station, which was just in time to catch the 124 bus. This new 124 bus now arrives directly at Colonel By, instead of going turning early and going through La Verendrye. At Hurdman, I met up with Paul and Kevin, and I saw a bunch of other people who I recognized from last year, and from previous encounters. When we got to school, we had a nice 30 minutes to chat with other kids and get up to date with them. I spent this time talking to people and checking my home room. When the bell rang, I went over to the gym, which is my home room, and I got briefed on everything that’s going to happen that day. We were told the day before that the day will be a regular school day, though all the classes that we are going to take are going to be run through on that one day. So after going to gym, Simon turned up late and then we left to our individual classes. It turns out that many of our classes are now split up, unlike the previous year when I had people who were in multiple classes with me. My first class was history, with Ms. Wallace. She seemed like a very energetic and experience teacher, however, she gave me the impression that she is going to give us alot of memorizing and homework to do. She explained the course outline, and sent us off to our next subject, which for me was French. It turns out that Eszter is in both my French and History class, kind of like last year. Other than that, there’s not much else, other than the fact that the vast majority of the people in my French class were from my old French class in grade 9. We played a game in French in which the teacher would call out a fact, and if that fact is true for us, we would take a step forward. If it wasn’t true, then we take a step back. The bell range before we had a chance to finish the game, however. Next up was science class, which took me a while to find, even though it was right there in my face. Our teacher was never a teacher, and this was his first teaching year. He was a quiet man, and was not very prepared for teaching. He had a sense of humour, however, due to his awkwardness, no one really laughed. His short speech about what to expect ended 20 minutes early, and so we had to endure an awkward 20 minute period in which he answered our questions, however awkwardly. Finally, I went with Yuang to the music portable, only to find the class full of asians, with the exception of 5 other students, who were white. Mr Crossett didn’t need to explain anything, as he has previously taught most of us already, last year. I found out later on in the class that Daniel Yang was in my class, which was awesome. It is now lunch time. I initially went around trying to look for Edward, but I couldn’t find him. Instead, I had lunch with Michael and Kingsong, and spent the rest of lunch in the library, reading up on World War 2. Lunch turned out to be very long, which was great. The bell rang, and I found out that I got put into the wrong math class. I am in academic math, instead of enriched math. This math period included a brief introduction from Mr. Virgo, and we played a game where we tried to organize ourselves alphabetically into a series of rows. This activity was an utter fail, as we only managed to get the last row and the first row organized, before dissolving into a giant mess. I noticed that Tim and Neelum were also in my class, and I asked them if their schedules were wrong too. It turns out that they voluntarily dropped pre-IB math, and I’m the only person in the class that’s not supposed to be there. So after listening to the same speech about what to expect in grade 10, we finally left to our next class. Somehow, I got into my English class first, and everyone else arrived a while later. Just about everyone was either Asian, or from my old English class. My teacher was a very interesting teacher, who initially didn’t seem that way. He had a good sense of humour, but he spoke with a bit of a monotone, making his appearance see very different from his personality. His face does not give much away from his personality, and he has a slight poker face that never smiles. He was a bit creepy because of these characteristics, but he also seemed like a charming fellow. After explaining the curriculum, and what to expect, we left again to our individual classes. There were two classes left, and it was either IB Geo, or Gym. Since gym is my homeroom, IB Geo was the next subject I went to attend. My teacher turned out to be Ms. Kennedy, which was a big surprise because I was expecting Mr. Bell to be my teacher. I was one of the last to arrive, so I found a seat near the back of the class, where Karan used to sit. Karan was already established, and Ahwon, Juliana, Alida, and Teresa were there too. Chuheng came in, and sat beside me. He got a bit mad at me because I didn’t sit closer to a hot IB1 girl. Ms. Kennedy told us the same thing that every other teacher told us. We were getting a bit weary of this, and she could easily tell. She didn’t explain much, because she knew about our condition. After constantly being spammed by Chuheng about how hot that IB1 girl looks, and how ridiculous that guy in front of us was, the class ended. My final unique class was gym. Here, the teacher, Mr. Rab, just gave us a bunch of forms and contracts for us to sign. My gym class was in conjunction with the girls’ French grade 10 pre-IB gym class. Mr. Rab told us about all the various activities that we were going to do throughout the year. All the activities sound fun, and I think I will enjoy phys ed.Overall, I think I will enjoy my year alot, as long as my schedule doesn’t change too much.
